Catherine Atkinson MP visited global construction software specialist STRUMIS Ltd at its offices in Derby to meet industry representatives and discuss skills, training and the future of UK steelwork construction.

The visit brought together representatives from STRUMIS and the British Constructional Steelwork Association (BCSA) to explore challenges facing the manufacturing and constructional steelwork sectors.

STRUMIS, which develops specialist MRP or manufacturing software used by steel fabricators and construction firms worldwide, supports more than 45,000 users across over 70 countries, with offices in the UK, Philadelphia in the USA and Dubai.

Discussions began with an overview of the BCSA’s work supporting the UK steelwork sector, followed by conversations around strengthening apprenticeship pathways and improving access to level 2 and level 3 training.

They highlighted the importance of industry collaboration and targeted funding to help attract more people into manufacturing careers.

During the meeting, Catherine Atkinson MP expressed particular interest in welding training provision and opportunities for closer links between industry and local education providers.

The conversation also covered sustainability and decarbonisation across the steel sector, including barriers to wider adoption of UK produced green steel and the pace of change required to support national net zero ambitions. The role of digital technology in improving productivity and reducing waste across fabrication processes formed a key part of the discussion.

Steve Watson, Sales Manager at STRUMIS presented an overview of the company’s work, demonstrating how digital tools are supporting greater efficiency and innovation across the global steel fabrication market.

Catherine Atkinson MP said: “Derby has always been a city of makers, combining practical skill with innovation. It was fantastic to see that spirit continuing at STRUMIS, where digital technology is shaping the future of steel manufacturing.

"I’m particularly encouraged by the focus on strengthening apprenticeships and expanding high quality training, including in specialist areas like welding. This Government’s commitment to delivering 50,000 more apprenticeships and investing in technical education is exactly what industries like steel need to grow and future-proof their workforce.

"By backing advanced manufacturing and working closely with industry, we can secure skilled jobs and keep Derby at the heart of Britain’s industrial future.”

Jonathan Clements, CEO of BCSA, said: “It was great to discuss the issues affecting our members, particularly around skills, training and the transition to lower carbon steel production with Catherine. Visits like this are important for the steelwork industry as they give policymakers direct insight into how the sector operates, the challenges businesses face and the investment needed to support innovation, productivity and long-term growth.”

Stuart Thompson, CEO of STRUMIS, said: “It was a pleasure to welcome Catherine to our Derby office and showcase the work our team is delivering worldwide. Digital innovation plays a growing role in improving productivity across construction, and discussions like this help highlight the importance of supporting both technology and skills within UK manufacturing.”
