On the 28th April 2022, the much awaited new Building Safety Bill passed through Parliament and received Royal Assent. This will increase the competence requirements for those involved in the design and construction of high-risk buildings.

Dr David Moore, BCSA Chief Executive Officer commented "The Association welcomes this and even though the new requirements don't yet apply to the broad spectrum of construction steelwork, the BCSA is taking the initiative and launching a new version of its Register of Qualified Steelwork Contractors (RQSC) for buildings, which will build on the competency requirements in the Building Safety Bill."

The NSSS Steering group is looking to incorporate the new RQSC (Buildings) in the next version of the NSSS, making it a mandatory requirement for all Steelwork Contractors. This will provide clients with the peace of mind that they will be employing steelwork contractors, who have proven ability, competency and capability.

"This is a momentous occasion. For the first time in its history the construction industry has a regulator. We look forward to a robust regulatory regime that will reward competent firms and drive out poor procurement and contractual practices that undermine building safety." Rudi Klein, Barrister & Director of Klein Legal member of BCSA's Commercial and Contracts Committee.
